With that in mind, most of Makita’s angle grinders not only have interchangeable batteries but also feature brushless motors that help with tool durability.

In this review, we will look at two of their outstanding models: theMakita XAG03Z 4-1/2-Inch Angle Grinderand theMakita XAG04Z 4-1/2-Inch / 5-Inch Angle Driver. As for the speed, it sports 8,500 RPM and uses a Makita 18V LXT Lithium-Ion 4.0 Ah battery to power it. This means that the tool is suitable for most home repairs and light to medium-duty shop tasks.

Also bearing a brushless motor that adjusts the RPM and torque together, theMakita XAG04Zhas an added Active Feedback-sensing Technology, which stops the motor and the wheel together to avoid mechanical wear and tear. It also has a lock-on feature for the slide switch for convenience and you can still check your battery levels using the 3-stage gauge.

This model is only slightly heavier than the previous one, at 5.6 pounds, yet it still has a similar length of 14 1/4 inches. Like the XAG03Z, this one also has a rubberized grip that helps sweaty hands better hold the tool (and more safely). It also has a soft start to preserve the inner gears, which are spiral bevel in design for efficiency.

It has a 5/8-11 UNC spindle type and takes up to 5-inch diameter wheels, which means it is meant for heavy-duty work. The speed is the same as the XAG03Z, 8,500 RPM, and also runs using a Makita 18V LXT Lithium-Ion battery.

Makita XAG03Z vs. Makita XAG04Z: Similarities

As both from the same brand (and model series), theMakita XAG03Zand theXAG04Zhave certain similarities, such as the following:

Battery Type

Both of them use a Makita 18V LXT Lithium-Ion 4.0 Ah battery to power them. If you have other Makita tools in your arsenal (that use this type of battery), you can use these batteries and interchange them with both of these angle grinders.

Separately, both of them have a 3-stage LED gauge, which means you don’t need to do the guesswork. Draining a battery too much is dangerous for both the battery and the tool motor itself. This is why knowing when to charge and when to keep using the tool is important to avoid problems in the long run.

No-Load Speed

These two Makita angle grinders have a no-load speed of 8,500 RPM. This speed is sufficient for tiling, pipework, concrete jobs, and general shop or garage work.

Unfortunately, the Makita XAG03Z is a discontinued product so it is harder to find and to use the manufacturer’s warranty for it. On the other hand, the XAG04Z is readily available from Makita and different retailers.

Which of the Two Makita Angle Grinders Should You Get?

If you prefer a lighter weight, then theMakita XAG03Zis a better choice for you. Although it is discontinued, it will work well for many tasks such as restoration and metalwork.

However, if you want an angle grinder that can be used for both 4 1/2-inch and 5-inch wheels then theMakita XAG04Zis a better fit. This compatibility makes it ideal even for larger materials and tougher tasks.
